On April 1, 2026, District 2 Commissioner Michelle Long Spears hosted the 3rd Annual State of DeKalb Animals Address and Luncheon at the Brookhaven City Centre, bringing together elected officials, advocates and residents who share a strong commitment to improving animal wellbeing in the community.

At the meeting, Peggy McCarthey accepted the Save Our DeKalb Animals (SODA) Partnership Award on behalf of GA Pet Coalition (GPC). Peggy, who is a volunteer Board Member of GPC, worked collaboratively with Commissioner Long Spears and others to advance spay/neuter initiatives in DeKalb County. In particular, GPC was part of a remarkable collaboration of local, state, and national organizations that came together to provide several hands-on training opportunities for licensed veterinarians to learn safe, efficient high-quality high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) surgical techniques to improve cat and dog spay/neuter surgery. Those techniques were put into practice at two DeKalb County sponsored Spay-a-thons where over one hundred dogs and cats were spayed or neutered.

GPC looks forward to continuing this collaborative effort with DeKalb County so that even more progress can be made in Saving Our DeKalb Animals in the coming years.
