On May 12, the Dunwoody City Council unanimously passed an ordinance to prohibit the retail sales of dogs and cats in pet stores.
Adoptions at pet stores, facilitated through animal care facilities or animal rescue organizations, are permitted. Dunwoody joins 500 other jurisdictions nationally (including 14 in Georgia) and eight states which recognize that most litters sold in pet stores are sourced from puppy and cat mills which prioritize profit over animal welfare.
Many national breed-specific clubs (e.g., National Labrador Retriever Club) explicitly prohibit their members from selling animals to pet stores.
SPECIAL THANKS are extended to Dunwoody Council Member Joe Seconder for sponsoring the initiative, and to constituents Meg Cotter Hulme and Debra Berger (retired State Director for Humane World for Animals, formerly known as the Humane Society of the United States) for their advocacy on behalf of the ordinance!
